onwards! we march...
left to right:
1. old chinese building...very strong character on its own!
2. See the new attached building on the roof top? - We thought it was quite impressive! Clean, stepped back and not-at-all intrusive on the overall look.
3. Hey we are walking here....not on a cyclo architecture tour....phew. Sweat sweat sweat.
if you take time to notice, there are so many variations to the concrete pattern balustrades for the apartments. It's really amazing composition when it's all put together down a street.
phnom penh has new buildings too! - look at the blue glass facade one on the far right.
Apartment building, 1940s
Unlike any other French building in Phnom Penh, this yellow 3 storey block bears a resemblance to Mediteranean French architecture.
Look at the solid small balconies and concrete frames around the window edges.
some daily shots from the streets of Phnom Penh - many black shoes for the working class although they looked battered and dusty to me. And stackable washing machines! you dun see many of these back in singapore.
Next....a store that sells rolls and rolls of film! What a fine composition of colours, looks like an expanded pixellated mosaic of small cubes!
Hemakcheat Cinema, 1950s
This large cinema in brutalist and modern style is today home to many people who live in desperate conditions.
(from left to right)
1. Peugeot Garage, 1935-1945. once peugout occupied the whole building; today there is only a small shop in the back.
2. me in the foreground, wj in the middle while the 'Peugout Building' at the back!
3. Corner Cafe, 1060s. Charming corner block with fine windows and old signs, note roof-top pergola in concrete, typical of the period.
(from left to right)
1. Blue glass and pink paint; 2004 ; An indication of how vulgar architecture in PP could become
2. Apartment block; 1960s; Unusual use of a whole urban block to create apartments with an internal courtyard - which may originally have been a garden and is now mostly built-over.
3. Single storey House in 19th century. The roofs has a ventilation chimney which is 'popping' out! So cute!
(from left to right) 1. Bet the top part of the building was an extension. 2. More prefab concrete patterns. 3. Can you start to see how the brown building is fixed abut to the concrete apt? 4. Street level view of new and old apt blocks.
22. Offices, 1960s
Imposing curved corner entrance (my guess is to address the cross junction road); with distinctive square panels and a perforated wall. Love the pre-fab concrete details. We don't get these sort of architecture in singapore now. Used to have quite a few too back in the 60s, like the queenstown library.
some photos by wj while we were trekking along the streets of PP.
20. Foresty Administration 1960s
Balcony -access offices (similar to our old HDB slab blocks), simlar style to Leroy and Mondets's Royal University of Phnom Penh. Note the three storey bas-relief panel
