Phnom Penh Day 03 - Architecture walk

day 3 in Phnom Penh
if anyone is interested in Khmer architecture, here's the website: CLICK!
They have a free walking tour map which we did for the afternoon. It basically covers some streets of PP and introducing their history and architecture.

Today is the day where me and wj were going to do quite abit of walking along the streets. So we slapped on our sunblock and let's bring out the brolly and sunnies!

10am: Beginning!

Old Royal Villa, 1900-1910
One of the few remaining Royal Villas around the Palace now used as offices.

Public toilet!!!! 1959 (which you can see the number stuck on the white wall)
One of a pair; modern strucutre and in french style.

of cos while admiring the architecture, i went street shopping on the way!!! hahahaha

cyclo +man in mask on bike. It gets really dusty on the streets as everyone practically travels on bikes. even students. Public transport is quite unheard of. or rather hardly used and not efficient as singapore.

let's keep swimming; let's keep swimming...lalalal....opps. walking i mean.

last photo: they even "caged" up their clothes from being stolen. So queer!

we love the black gates that stood so stark against the white walls.

3rd-4th photo on right:
Capital Cinema by local architect Vann Molyvann,1964
No longer a cinema, the splendid exerior is fairly original; inaugurated by showing Vadim's And God Created Woman (1957) in the presence of the architect.

from left to right:
1. us (let's not forget who are the ones taking all the photos! hahahah)
2 & 3 & 4.Prom Bayon Cinema, 1960s
A cinema integrated into an apartment block. Vertical sun-shading above the cinema. Cinema is still in use.

2nd Photo:
Cinema Lux, 1935-45 with Deco apartments attached.
Still in use as a cinema; the facade has been almost totally altered.

3rd photo:
Gate to the apartment building where some kids were hanging around

4th photo: No.50 Norodom Blvd
Use of framed "brise-soleil" shading and free-form roof pavilion.

wj keeps checking the map, just in case we might miss a turn and end up looking at all the wrong buildings! Then it will be such a boo-boo!!!!

1130am: can you believe it! in one and a half's hours, we managed to cover almost 50% groundwork on the aki tour!!!
So we decided that it was time to have an early lunch at Garden cafe. heehee...

~ will be continued!
