Labour Day at Suan Thai Restaurant

It's Labour Day (1st May) and Happy Holidays to everyone!!!
Today we are celebrating my dad's birthday in advance because his birthday falls on a working day. And I've book for a table for 4 at Suan Thai where they serve Thai cuisine buffet style but in ala carte.
And there are 6 dishes on the Buffet menu where you can only ask for one time only.

the desserts and salads you have get it yourself by the side of the restaurant. No problem at all.
I was late in the booking so had to settle for outside doors, when i arrived, they gave me an outdoor seat which was situated way back at the restaurant where it was like a greenhouse effect!!! Very hot and stuffy!

And being so pregnant, i really couldn't take the heat, so hubs asked whether could we sit along the 5 foot way outside where there were a table left. And they obliged and quickly set up the dining wares for us.

the food standard has dropped i must say since my last visit which was quite some time ago...probably due to many people are using some coupons to have a good deal meal here.

there's really nothing nice or worthy to compliment on their thai cuisine. The fish cake took really long to arrive and i had to remind the waiter 3 times before i got it really fried and dry. The Tom Yum Soup seafood was so-so. The pandan wrapped chicken was not aromatic, the chicken satay was edible, the oyster stir fried vegetables was ok, stir fried baby kai lan with salted fish wasn't great either because the small kailan was old and stringy...
The beef with cashew nut was horrible, it tasted like sweet sour pork and not anything like beef!
The boneless stuff chicken wing reminded me of siew mai...just alot of flour and minced meat.
Chicken with basil leaves was also passable...
The only dish i found palatable was the sweet sour fried fish! Which is not very Thai right?

So don't bother coming here for their buffet unless no choice.

Velle Can Cook 33- Hokkien Mee

hahaha!!!
This needs 1kg of prawn shells!!! Let me warn you first before you attempt the prawn stock for cooking Local style Hokkien mee...

once you have the prawn stock, the rest is easy peasy!
Ingredients:
(soup stock)
- 500g Pork bones
- 1 kg of prawn shells
Put pork bones in a pot of boiling water for 1 min to rinse off. Drain and put aside.
Start boiling a pot of water, add in prawn shells and pork bones.
Simmer overnight or at least 5 hours (half a day)
Salt and pepper to taste.

(Stir Fried Noodles) serves 4
- packet of yellow noodles and beehoon from NTUC
- 1 or 2 Squids sliced
- 12 Prawns sliced into half, de-veined, head and shells removed
- 1 Fish Cake sliced
- 2 Eggs beaten
- 1 tbsp Chopped garlic
- 3 layer pork
- handful of bean sprouts
- Spring Onion or chives for stir frying and to garnish
- calamansi to squeeze before eating
- sambal chilli (from a bottle will do!)

Let the real cooking begins
Add 1 tbsp of oil to wok or saucepan, stir fry garlic till fragrant.
Meanwhile, heat up the prawn stock, use a strainer, cook your squid and prawns in the stock and set aside.
In the wok or saucepan, pour in the beaten egg, wait until it barely sets then stir briefly like it's going to curdle.
Next, put in the noodles and using high heat, sear them. You will have to stir them from time to time. Ladle in 1 cup of prawn stock, fry until the stock is almost dry.
Then ladle in another cup of stock together with bean sprouts, cover and simmer.
Once noodles and bean sprouts are nearly done, add in the cooked prawn, squid, sprouts, chopped spring onion and seasoning.
Adjust seasoning to your taste.
Garnish with spring onion, half cut calamansi and sambal on the side!

Brunch at Antoinette

Sometimes during my pregnancy, weekends are really worth waiting for and it's always packed with loads of things to prep for the baby's coming. Then there are other times during weekends where you just don't have the knack to do anything at all and really want to go back to the usual lifestyle of having brunch, meeting gal pals and having a good time bonding.

so this weekend is one of those days where i'm back to my old self and want to have some fun!

we chose this little parisian cafe at Penhas Road for our mini gathering where i updated the gals on my pregnancy journey so far...and shared some good food! The french toast with caramelized bananas were really a treat! And it came in 3 slices which were perfect for us 3! The bananas were so nice..soft and sweet, goes really well with the eggy toast.

we also ordered a salty crepe with ham and sunny side up...this one was so-so.
But it was good company that i really enjoyed...loads of laughter and tsk-tski-ng at others...Opps...hmm...well everyone does that right? well almost everyone!

+ happy weekend +

don't make pregnancy slow you down!

Duchess of Our place

Yes, our poor doggie has gotten mites on his forehead and it has been scratching like crazy until it bled. So Daddy and Mummy brought him to the vet for some medicine and cream and to prevent further scratching, he is wearing a lampshade now!
